The importance of ESG – Why is data collection critical? Part 3

Why is data collection such an important part of ESG strategy?

The built environment is responsible for more emissions in the UK than any other sector apart from transport. Decarbonising it is an urgent priority in the UK’s strategy to achieve Net Zero Carbon by 2050 – and a large part of that depends on an effective implementation of ESG strategies in buildings.

There is no way to do this without gathering as much data as possible about what emissions a building produces, and then applying it intelligently to reduce energy usage and carbon. If you don’t know what the building uses, you can’t make cuts – and for this reason, data collection is the foundation of sustainability in the built environment.

In the third article of this ESG series, we look at the central role that data collection plays in any ESG strategy, and how a technology-led approach is a key part of any Net Zero Carbon strategy for your building.

Other articles in this series include:

Data collection is the foundation of any strategy to successfully cut energy usage and carbon emissions in buildings in a way that can help you meet ESG goals and achieve a Net Zero emissions building. If you don’t have the data, you won’t know how much energy you are using or where you are using it, which means you won’t be able to reduce your usage.

The best way to understand your energy usage and begin cutting out wastage is to turn to modern ‘smart’ technology and achieve total practical control of your building. The first stage is to install integrated fast fibre networks to create the technology infrastructure which provides the smart communication network required.

From there, smart metering technology and sensors can be installed on this network to begin measuring energy usage accurately and in real time across the building. All usage can be viewed on our cloud-based building management system, and automation can be used within pre-agreed parameters to control energy usage automatically.

In this way, you can make huge energy savings and achieve significant cuts to your building’s carbon emissions quickly and in a smart way. There are huge environmental benefits as energy waste is eliminated, contributing instantly to your sustainability and Net Zero Carbon commitments and progressing your journey to a sustainable future.

Additionally, taking a technology-first approach to creating a sustainable energy building is cost neutral, with all outlay being repaid quickly thanks to a significant and ongoing reduction in wastage. The costs of the systems can be spread over periods of 3+ years to ensure you receive a reduction in your overheads immediately.

What’s more, this same smart network system used to reduce energy can also be used to operate all of your other building systems – from fire safety and security systems to HVAC and decentralised energy networks. In this way, using technology to reduce energy and meet your ESG responsibilities can also provide efficiencies and improvements to all of your other building systems. The benefits of upgrading your building to meet environmental targets pays off in a whole variety of ways.

At IBG, we do not write or roll out ESG strategy for businesses, but we offer bespoke, data-led solutions which can help you meet your ESG responsibilities.
